Treadlette Tuesday: a new baby quilt!

It's been all kid stuff for Treadlette Elizabeth lately! She made this baby quilt for her new nephew. (Remember last week's cottage? That was for this little guy's big sister!)

Elizabeth sewed this simple design mostly from her stash, but found the perfect woodland backing at Treadle! She free-motion quilted it in a wood-grain pattern.

One more detail Elizabeth loves to add is an inscription block with the new baby's name and birthdate. The Tee Juice fabric markers from our friends at Wet Paint are perfect for this!

Treadlette Tuesday: Elizabeth's Quilt

Elizabeth made this bright, cheerful quilt from a fabulous panel print we have in the store. The panel and several coordinates are part of the Soulshine and Daydreams collection - see them here! Elizabeth also chose several fabrics from Treadle to fill in the design, including prints from Tula Pink and Kaffe Fassett. (Plus a few from her stash, of course!)

This pattern is available for FREE at the Benartex website - click here to get it!

For backing, she chose a Cloud 9 Organic cotton floral print from the store.

She quilted it herself with a free-motion curlicue pattern.

And put in a few extra details around the face!

You can see this quilt on display at Treadle. Plus, Elizabeth is teaching our Beginning Quilting class starting next week! If this project inspires you to learn quilting, go check out the class!

One Of A Kind Quilt Class

Longtime quilter and teacher Susan Stein is bringing us her One-of-a-Kind Quilt class, coming up this month at Treadle!

The One-of-a-Kind Quilt class is fun because it utilizes the "orphan" blocks, homer hankies, cross stitch pieces, precious bits of fabric, photos printed onto fabric, even swatches of wedding fabrics that people have hidden in drawers. Make simple four-inch filler blocks chosen from a "menu" of choices to expand on your theme pieces to make a nicely-sized wall hanging.

On the second day of Christmas...

On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me… cotton pre cuts - jelly rolls, layer cakes, stash builders, and fat quarters, too!

Useful for more than just quilting - they’re a great way to round out your resource center and give your favorite sewist (or you) something to smile about this Christmas!

Treadlette Tuesday: Rebecca's Snowpeople Quilt plus Tutorial!

Treadlette Rebecca pieced this adorable quilt top, and sent us instructions too!

How to make your own Snowpeople quilt top with sashing!

This is cut with rotary method and 1/4” seams are included.

Materials needed:
Lightest fabric - 1/4 yard
Light fabric- 1/8 yard
Medium fabric 1/4 yard
Dark fabric 1/2 yard  (this color is also used for the outer border, if you want a different color for the outer border you need 1/3 of a yard, and then can reduce this amount to 1/4 yard)
Inner border 1/2 yard
One snow people panel

Cutting for pieced sashing:
Lightest fabric cut one strip of each width: 3”, 2 1/2", & 2”
Light fabric cut one of each width: 2” & 2 1/2”
Medium fabric cut one of each width: 2” & 3”
Dark fabric cut one of each width: 1 3/4” & 3”
Cut the snow people panel apart along the vertical lines so that you have eight separate pieces with two snow people in each, now cut two of these in half so that you have four separate snow people.

Assembly:

Seam 3 strips consisting of 2 of the panels with 2 snowpeople and one panel with one snow person.

For the pieced sashing:
Stitch the strips together, alternating colors and varying the widths. It’s easiest in the next step to have two sets of the stripe unit- for example, piece from lightest to dark so that you have four rows of various widths. Press seams to one side.
Now take one of these strip units and cut 5” wide strips. Your new unit should look like little books stacked on top of each other. Seam these units together along the long edge so that you have two sections of approximately 62-65 inches long.

Inner border:
Cut 5 3” strips. Cut two of these in half along the fold. Seam one long and one short strip together along the short end.

Outer border:
Cut 3 4 1/4” strips, cut one in half along the fold, stitch one long and one short section together.

Assemble the quilt:
Stitch an inner border to each side of the snow people section. Stitch a pieced border between the snowpeople sections. I stitch from top to bottom of each seam, and trim off excess at the bottom as I go - I also played around with my pieced sections by taking out a few of the dark pieces and adding some of the inner border fabric to that area so that my inner borders have more variety - using the inner border fabric there is a nice way to blend the sections. Stitch the outer border to each side of the quilt.

Finished! Send it to Nanette Sutherland for lovely long arm quilting to finish!

Treadlette Tuesday: Rebecca's Quilt PLUS Tutorial!

Treadlette Rebecca has used this stunning panel print to construct a fantastic quilt top, and she's sharing her sashing directions with you! See below for instructions!

Here's a detail of one of the animals in this print. Gorgeous painterly effects adorn each square.

Here's how Rebecca made that neat sashing:

Materials needed:
5/8 yard of ombre for border
7/8 yard for sashing

1/4 inch seams included

Horizontal sashing: Cut three 2 1/2 inch wide strips, then trim each stack to 9 3/4”, giving you twelve 2 1/2x 9 3/4 strips. Seam a strip between the animal panels, starting with an animal and having four panels in each row. Press seams to the side. Next cut a 5 1/2 inch wide strip of sashing, then trim stack to 9 3/4 inches. Stitch one of these to the top of 2 of the animal panel sections, and one to the bottom of the other two animal panel sections. Press seams to one side. If needed, trim any edges of sashing to animal block.

Vertical sashing : Cut four 2 1/2 inch wide strips, then cut one of these strips into three even lengths. Seam a long strip and a short strip together- you’ll trim away the excess after you seam it to your animal section. You can use a bias seam to hide the join even more if desired Join an animal section with the five inch sashing at the top to one with the five inch sashing at the bottom. Trim excess sashing at bottom, continue joining the sections - alternating the wide sashing so that you get the offset effect.

Outer sashing: Cut five 2 inch wide strips. Cut one of these into two 8 inch lengths and two 14 inch lengths. Seam each of these to one of the 44 inch strips. Stitch the shorter of these strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, then stitch the longer strips to the sides. You may need to trim excess of any of these as you go.

Ombré Border: Cut six 3 1/2 inch wide strips. Cut two of these in half along the fold, you now have four pieces 22 inches wide, seam each of these to a long strip, matching the tonality of the ombré. On the top right side of the quilt, take a border piece with the darkest value and seam to the edge. You will need to start about 8-9 inches in from the end of the border strip to get the darkest value- just be sure you have enough to reach the end of the quilt- be aware of this adjustment as you add the border pieces. You will trim away the excess border from both edges. On the left side, starting at the bottom this time, take a border piece and start with the darkest value and stitch to the side of the quilt. Trim excess. Now at the top of the quilt, take a border piece, matching the darkest value to the right side border and stitch to top. Trim excess, and repeat this at the bottom.

You can see this quilt at the store for even more details and inspiration!

Treadlette Tuesday: Halloween Quilt

Rebecca has used the coordinating panel print from her pillow project to make this gorgeous quilt!

Minimal piecing was required; just a wide and narrow border around the panel print! She machine-quilted it herself, using a coordinating Halloween print for the back and an orange and green William Morris reproduction print for the binding.

Jennifer's Polar Quilt

Check out this quilt we currently have displayed in the store. The fabric panel features cold-climate animals such as penguins, polar bears, and moose, all wrapped up in adorable scarves and hats!

Treadlette Jennifer made this whole-cloth quilt by simply using the fabric panel as-is (no piecing!) and hand-quilting along the print's lines with embroidery floss. Coordinating prints make the colorful binding.

It's just about too cute to bear! Perfect for a lap or crib.
