Treadlette Jennifer has a fabulous new project that she's making into her latest class! Using mostly simple hand-sewing techniques, you can make this simple, elegant storage case for all your lovely jewels and baubles!

The Jewelry Roll is perfect for travel - use the long ribbons to tie up necklaces, hook earrings through the small trim, and string your rings onto the short ribbon and button it closed. Roll it all up and tie - your jewelry is safe and ready to roll!

Classes In Depth: Make it Sew

In the store we're often asked about sewing machine issues. We meet folks who may have been sewing for years and still wonder how to properly adjust tension, how to do basic troubleshooting, and why machines sometimes act up.

If you love to sew - except when your machine is acting up! - or you're new to using a machine, the Make It Sew class is for you!

You'll bring your machine and spend a few hours with Michele making adjustments and fine-tuning your stitches. Ask all your burning machine questions - such as why your machine sometimes jams up, spits out wads of tangled thread, or skips stitches.

Learn sewing machine troubleshooting, basic maintenance, and how to get the most from your sewing machine.Top and bottom tension issues, needle choices, and stitch configuration will be among the issues addressed.

Classes In Depth: Fastest Quilt In The Midwest

When Melissa made this quilt, she started at 2:00 in the afternoon and by 5:00, the whole top was pieced. She knew it would make a great class for quilters with the need for speed, so The Fastest Quilt In The Midwest became our newest quilting class. (We can't promise yours will be as fast as Melissa's, but it's pretty darn quick!)

Made from coordinating 2-inch strips sewn end-to-end, this quilt is simple, fresh, and modern. In this class, you'll construct your entire quilt top and learn about ways to quilt and finish it. A great instant gratification project or confidence builder for budding quilters! Pre-cut your strips in advance to maximize your sewing time!

Classes In Depth: Simple Summer Blouses

Summer Sewing should be simple. Easy to make, and easy to wear. A few basic patterns you can make again and again in pretty fabrics. That's what our Simple Summer Blouses class is all about!

In this 2-session class starting June 24, you'll make your perfect summer blouse! Ideal for the advanced beginner or for the experienced sewist who just wants to take life easy.

You'll get a list of recommended patterns to choose from; no fussy details, just cool, comfy blouses and tops and the best, easiest construction techniques.

Pair your pattern with a soft cotton lawn or shirting and you'll be sipping lemonade in the shade in no time!

The pattern used for the blouse above is New Look 6513, a cute popover top with tucks and hidden bust shaping.

Classes In Depth: Historic Sewing Workshop

Hey Treadle Friends, Elizabeth here! As you may know, I am seriously into historic sewing. I have been making historic garments for over 20 years, ever since I went to my first Victorian Ball. I was hooked!

Over the years, I have learned a lot about historic techniques, accuracy, and different eras. A few years ago I translated that experience into a class.

Historic Sewing Workshop is a 5-session class that meets every other week, giving you plenty of time to do your sewing "homework" in between.

My personal experience ranges from about 1550 to 1880, but the class covers anything up to 1950, so vintage style projects are welcome. We'll cover corset-making for various eras, proper underwear and foundations, how to re-create a fashion plate or portrait, and so much more.

This class is open to the garment and era of your choice; you pick your own project, your own pace, and your own level of accuracy. Whether you want to hand-sew everything, or you'd rather machine-sew and take some shortcuts, we'll make a plan for whatever suits your needs.

Classes in Depth: Summer Sewing: Marcy Tilton Jacket

The Material Girls have a whole new Summer Sewing Series, multiple classes to help you put together some fun wardrobe basics and have a great time, too!

The first class in the Summer Sewing Series is the Marcy Tilton Jacket. Using Vogue 9244, you'll make a versatile lightweight jacket, perfect for Minnesota summers, unpredictable weather, and moving in and out of air-conditioned spaces.

Cool pockets, a casual hood, and shaped hemline make this jacket unique and fun. Your fabric choice can transform this pattern from just a little cover up to a stand alone “upscale sweatshirt."

The class will cover techniques for sewing with knits on your regular sewing machine, but we recommend having some experience sewing with knits. Serger construction will also be covered, so if you have a serger and love it, bright it along!

Classes in Depth: History of Fashion

We're starting a new series here on the blog! Classes in Depth will tell you more about some of the unique opportunities offered in our Treadle classroom. Our class page tells you the basic info, but Classes in Depth aims to give you a little more, so your questions can be answered and you can figure out just which classes are right for you!

I'm starting out with one of my favorite classes to teach, History of Fashion!

In this 2.5 hour lecture and discussion, I will cover a 400-year timeline of fashion history, including lots of pretty pictures! We'll focus on women's wear but trends in menswear styles will also be covered.

I hope to address many common questions about historic clothing. Why so much underwear? Were corsets uncomfortable? How do you get your hairdo that big? We'll also talk about the why of fashion, and what inspired change.

If you're interested in re-creating historic garments, this is perfect starter class. I will give you tips on how to begin and lots of resources for learning more.

If you like vintage details and want to incorporate them into your modern sewing, we'll cover that too! There are plenty of ways to be inspired by the past.
