Sewing masks is our superpower!

As we move into the glorious weather of a Minnesota summer, in my head it is still spring. So much of this year has felt like Groundhog Day - reliving the sameness every day. At Treadle we are working with reduced hours and the ambiguity of when, or even if, fabrics and notions will be available. Many times the answer is “it depends."

 

We are getting used to wearing masks, trying to recognize customers, and always appreciate a well-chosen print for a mask. We are thankful to all our customers - new as well as old - for your patience and good humor.

And we are still making masks and masks kits. Over 15,000 to date.

We have been made aware of two communities desperately in need of masks.

Mask North Minneapolis Project has a goal “to increase masking by 80% in North Minneapolis and decrease the spread of COVID-19 virus. To mask all of North Minneapolis in collaboration with community partners.” The project was started by two family medicine physicians at Broadway Family Medicine in collaboration with the African American Leadership Forum.

Mixed Blood Theatre, in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, is committed to distributing over 1,000 masks for C-R residents over the coming months, along with information on the importance of masks in the fight against COVID-19.

Treadle, in partnership with Sew Good Goods, will continue to provide mask kits at no charge for these communities.

Mixed Blood Theatre is accepting masks of any design.

Both mask initiatives are greatly in need of children’s sizes as well as adult masks.

Kits that make 12 or more masks may be picked up at Treadle during regular business hours.

We will also be a drop-off for finished masks for both initiatives, in addition to individual hand sanitizer for the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood.

We are thrilled to announce another evening of Tales from India. It’s been six months since Shweta Kasana of Wool Gathering Company first enthralled us with stories about the beautiful fabrics we get from her - and the people who design and weave them.



Join us Tuesday, January 28 at 6:00 p.m. as we welcome her again. What could be better in the dead of winter in Minnesota than Indian chai tea, a door prize or two, new Indian fabrics, and stories from warm, exotic India!

Pay It Forward - Sewing Edition! Event Nov 15!

Join us again as we sew book bags in partnership with local non-profit Sew Good Goods to benefit children and young adults whose families are refugees on the Mexican border. 

Libros Para El Viaje/Books for the Journey has been distributing books in the borderland region (El Paso, Texas, Las Cruces, NM and Juárez, México) for over a year.
“We go where there is a need. With the changing ICE policies, more refugees are being detained in México and near the El Paso bridge in Tent cities.  We go into small unincorporated communities ("colonias"), into hospitality centers, community centers, churches, motels, locations where refugees are housed. The need is great.This has been our dream: to inspire others to create programs to help refugee families with books.” - Denise Chavez, Casa Camino Real Bookstore, coordinating bookstore

Book bags will be cut and ready to sew.

Tales from India

We had such a great time at Tales From India last week, our exclusive talk with Shweta Kasana of Wool Gathering Co.!

Wool Gathering supplies us with luscious handmade textiles from skilled artisans in India. Shweta talked about the process of creating and importing these unique fabrics!

Tired of winter? Cabin fever? Come to our Bye, Bye February party!

Dear Hearty Minnesotan, We know you love winter, but maybe, just maybe, this is a bit much. Punxsutawney Phil, that famous predictor of spring, does like to tease. This year he flat out lied!

Being made of tougher stuff, let’s not give up and give in yet, let’s kick February out the door with all the joie de vivre we have left (maybe not much, but it’s enough)!

March is Food Share Month in Minnesota, and we are teaming up with local volunteers to donate 100 reusable totes, sewn, decorated and filled, to the Groveland Food Shelf. All materials and equipment will be provided by Sew Good Goods and Treadle. Once the totes are sewn, they will be decorated with Earth-friendly themes and messages by youth at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis. The totes will then be filled with donations and delivered to Groveland Food Shelf in March.

No time to sew with us? We will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items and toiletries through Tuesday March 5. See you there!

Grand Meander Event!

Grand Meander is this weekend! Join us for a charitable crafting event! Saturday December 2 from 10:00 - 5:00.

Craft & create to benefit others! Stop by to help us sew reusable tote bags, courtesy of Sew Good Goods, for Keystone Community Services food shelf. Sew Good Goods is a local non-profit that embraces the notion that in creating and giving hand-crafted goods a unique connection is made and shared.

It's free to participate! Stay a few minutes or a few hours. All materials & machines provided.
