Friday Fun Fact: Pinking shears

Ever wondered how pinking shears got their name?

The word pink dates back to the 13th century, when it wasn't yet associated with a color; it meant to pierce or stab. Eventually pink became used to describe the regular, zigzag-cut edges that were so fashionable during the 16th century and onward. It's possible that without pinking shears, this meaning would have been lost to history.

And the color? Pink is the common name of the garden flower Dianthus, a sweet little bloom with rosy petals and zigzagged edges - they look like they've been pinked! So our Dianthus was named pink for its sawtooth edges, and pink eventually came to mean Dianthus-colored.

Treadlette Tuesday: a cottagecore look from Grace

Are you a lover of cottagecore - all things soft, woodland, and vaguely old-timey? Grace has created this gorgeously curated ensemble that's giving us major cottagecore vibes.

She made a sweeping circle skirt from a vintage floral fabric, a soft dirndl blouse in handkerchief linen, and a double-breasted vest with teeny buttons in a mustardy ocher cotton. It all works so perfectly together with an air of vintage charm!

Grace used the blouse pattern from Folkwear 123 Austrian Dirndl and the vest from Folkwear 222 Vintage Vests. She self-drafted the skirt.

Friday Fun Fact: Your tape measure's secret!

Did you know you have a secret measurement gauge in one of your most common sewing tools? It might even be right next to you right now!

Of course your tape measure, well, measures, but you can also use it as a seam gauge in a pinch. A standard tape measure is exactly 5/8" wide - the same as our most common pattern seam allowance.

So next time you need to check a seam allowance, just turn your tape measure sideways for a quick look!

Watch for more Fun Facts in our upcoming emails and on this blog, every Friday!
