Here's a detail of one of the animals in this print. Gorgeous painterly effects adorn each square.
Here's how Rebecca made that neat sashing:
Materials needed:
5/8 yard of ombre for border
7/8 yard for sashing
1/4 inch seams included
Horizontal sashing:
Cut three 2 1/2 inch wide strips, then trim each stack to 9 3/4”, giving you twelve 2 1/2x 9 3/4 strips.
Seam a strip between the animal panels, starting with an animal and having four panels in each row. Press seams to the side.
Next cut a 5 1/2 inch wide strip of sashing, then trim stack to 9 3/4 inches.
Stitch one of these to the top of 2 of the animal panel sections, and one to the bottom of the other two animal panel sections. Press seams to one side.
If needed, trim any edges of sashing to animal block.
Vertical sashing :
Cut four 2 1/2 inch wide strips, then cut one of these strips into three even lengths. Seam a long strip and a short strip together- you’ll trim away the excess after you seam it to your animal section. You can use a bias seam to hide the join even more if desired
Join an animal section with the five inch sashing at the top to one with the five inch sashing at the bottom. Trim excess sashing at bottom, continue joining the sections - alternating the wide sashing so that you get the offset effect.
Outer sashing:
Cut five 2 inch wide strips. Cut one of these into two 8 inch lengths and two 14 inch lengths. Seam each of these to one of the 44 inch strips. Stitch the shorter of these strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, then stitch the longer strips to the sides. You may need to trim excess of any of these as you go.
Ombré Border:
Cut six 3 1/2 inch wide strips. Cut two of these in half along the fold, you now have four pieces 22 inches wide, seam each of these to a long strip, matching the tonality of the ombré. On the top right side of the quilt, take a border piece with the darkest value and seam to the edge. You will need to start about 8-9 inches in from the end of the border strip to get the darkest value- just be sure you have enough to reach the end of the quilt- be aware of this adjustment as you add the border pieces. You will trim away the excess border from both edges.
On the left side, starting at the bottom this time, take a border piece and start with the darkest value and stitch to the side of the quilt. Trim excess.
Now at the top of the quilt, take a border piece, matching the darkest value to the right side border and stitch to top. Trim excess, and repeat this at the bottom.
